PDX: Vanishing Varieties
PDX: Local Victory, Launchpad Gallery
This show was based on the fact that in 2007 there were numerous people growing food in the backyards in Portland, Oregon. It reminded me of the time when people grew food in their gardens during WWII. (We have since dealt with this in the days of COVID). I combined imagery from my own childhood growing up in NH with a family who grew food.
Vanishing Varieties: MFA Thesis Show. Autzen Gallery, Portland State University, PDX, Oregon. 2009
Four large oil paintings hung on the walls with a floor full of vegetable plant starts.
These referred to my father’s garden journals that he kept from my childhood. Fully rendered: Still found through their original company.
Undertone of blue or brown: Bought out by another company. Cut out shape: No longer available today.
I started over 1,000 seeds starts and gave them away as part of the show.
PDX: Selected Work: 2005 to 2007
I showed at numerous venues while I lived in Portland, Oregon. These are some selections from different shows.
Portland, Maine: Maine College of Art
I attended the Maine College of Art from 2000 to 2004 where I focused on Painting. At artist lectures I would ask them what their favorite food was. I would then paint their portrait as that food item.
Since I was paying my way through college I also worked at numerous restaurants. The concept of “You Are What You Eat,” was a major influence. These were all painted in oil.
